ranked universities and liberal arts colleges according to how they serve their communities and country. The main criteria are:
1. How well it performs as an engine of social mobility (ideally helping the poor to get rich rather than the very rich to get very, very rich): a complicated formula based on the percentage of students who get Pell grants
2. How well it does in fostering scientific and humanistic research: for liberal arts colleges, the total amount of research spending, percent of alumni going to PhD programs
3. How well it promotes an ethic of service to community and country: percentage enrolled in ROTC and Peace Corps, and percent of work study students involved in community service projects.
Gettysburg is ranked 156th, the lowest ranking of any of the US News top liberal arts colleges. Bryn Mawr, Wellesley, and Wesleyan are at the top. Dickinson is #50, F&M is #97. What does this mean? I don't know.
